Plans submitted for 32 social rent apartments on former Apollo Inn site as part of wider masterplan
Residents in Miles Platting are being invited to have their say on a proposed new affordable housing scheme that forms part of wider regeneration for the area.
Jigsaw Homes Group, in partnership with Manchester City Council, is looking to deliver much-needed new homes in and around Varley Street.
This will include the development of 32 one-bedroom apartments for social rent on the site of the long-vacant former Apollo Inn. The pub, which has stood empty for around 15 years, will form Phase 1 of the masterplan.
Plans for the Apollo Inn site were submitted to Manchester City Council this week, which can be found via on the Manchester City Council website >
This marks the start of a wider vision to transform the area and provide high-quality, affordable housing. Approval has already been granted to demolish the pub and this will begin later this month.
To ensure the voices of local people are at the heart of this process, independent social enterprise PLACED has been commissioned to gather community input and ideas.
The online Varley Street consultation is now live, offering residents and community groups a chance to share their views on local priorities – from public spaces, housing and safety, to travel and amenities and to shape what they would like to see in any future development.
The area earmarked for development includes land around Jigsaw’s Baker House building on Oldham Road and stretches from Varley Street to Falkland Avenue and down to Rosewell Avenue.
In addition to the online survey, ‘PLACED ‘has been running drop-in sessions for local community groups, providing further opportunities for residents to get involved and help shape the future of the neighbourhood.
There will be a pop-up event taking place on Wednesday 16 July from 2pm until 7pm at the Church of the Apostles on Ridgway Street, which anyone who lives or works in the community is welcome to attend.
Jigsaw Homes has a strong track record of providing homes in the area, having delivered housing and neighbourhood services since 2007 as part of the Renaissance Consortium under a 30-year contract.
Richard King, Land and New Business Manager at Jigsaw Homes Group said: “We are pleased to be able to provide more affordable housing in Miles Platting, starting with Phase 1, the Apollo Inn. Having this community engagement is a real chance for people in Miles Platting to influence what happens in their neighbourhood. We want to hear what’s important to residents and what they would like to see in their local area so we would urge as many people as possible to take part and give us their views.”
Cllr Gavin White, Manchester City Council’s executive member for housing and development, said: “This is another exciting housing investment opportunity for the Miles Platting community following the major PFI programme that has seen more than 1,500 Council homes refurbished in the area – and over 650 homes built in the community.
“This neighbourhood has a huge amount of potential, on the doorstep of the city centre, and this latest regeneration programme will deliver even more social and affordable homes for local people. This is your chance to give your feedback on an exciting investment plan for Miles Platting.”
The online survey can be accessed here: Miles Platting | PLACED engagement until 27 July.
